Hut to Hut Hiking, X-C Skiing and Snowshoeing > Clearwater

Hike in all Four Seasons

Breathe in the refreshing mountain air as you climb, winding through trees and valleys. The rugged mountain peaks of the Cariboos stretch into a cloudless sky. This is hut to hut hiking in the North Thompson’s back country.

In the winter, outfitters and guides can take you hut to hut hiking in the snowy back country. Enjoy the stunning scenery on your cross country skis or snowshoes.

In the warmer months, rainbows of alpine blooms fill rolling meadows as far as the eye can see. You catch sight of a mule deer dashing through the forest as birds serenade you. Explore where old growth rainforests give way to stony mountain slopes, where wild flowers shelter scurrying creatures and tranquil lakes call to you to jump in for a swim. Reach your peak; find your path, let nature lead you in the North Thompson Valley.

Hut to Hut Hiking in the Cariboo Mountains

Whether it’s a day trip in the old growth rainforest or a week-long adventure going hut to hut, there’s nothing quite like this adventure.

Hut to Hut – A Hiker’s Paradise

Interior Cedar-Hemlock, sub-alpine and alpine tundra eco zones climb from valley floor to the peaks of sloping mountains in the pure wilderness of Wells Gray Provincial Park. Born of erupting volcanoes, scarred and scoured by retreating glaciers, this is Canada at its most raw and wild. And it’s all a half-hour drive off the Yellowhead Highway, near the town of Clearwater. Take your time and explore Wells Gray on a three, five or seven-day hut to hut adventure on foot or on cross-country skis. Restore yourself as you play in nature, climb its peaks and tumble through its fields.

Backpack in Backcountry

Grab your backpack and embark on a guided excursion over stony mountain slopes, fields of wildflowers and an ancient rainforest. Hiking the Cariboo Mountains is the ultimate out of bounds outdoor adventure. Amble along, over rocky crests, through cedar and hemlock forests to sub-alpine meadows, and over the rigid spine of the Trophy Mountains. Picnic along the shores of a cool, mountain lake, and bed down for the night in cozy, backcountry cabins. This is how we relax in the North Thompson.

Hut to Hut in the Winter

Strap on your snowshoes or lace up your boots and secure your bindings. It’s time to explore the back country of the Cariboo Mountains.

Hut to Hut Snowcapades

Intrepid travellers and backcountry skiers and snowshoers put hut to hut skiing at the top of their “must do” list.

Glide from hut to hut in a winter wonderland. Propel yourself through winter canvassed trails, bright from the gleaming winter sun. Strap on snowshoes and plow through the fresh blanket of snow on the forest floor. Snow bunnies pop out of their hiding places as other wildlife tracks mark the way. You’ll feel exhilarated by the frosty mountain air.

Be Prepared

Before you go, make sure you take an avalanche course or a full clinic on hiking the backcountry in winter. Wells Gray Adventures also offers guided hut to hut skiing in the winter.
